Milana Mensah

The Dreaming Athlete

The slow rhythm of breathing washes over my body
Beads of sweat drip down light droplets of rain
My body morphs into that of a gazelle
Long legged and graceful across the grassland
BANG! The sound of the gun echoes throughout the grassland
Stride.stride.stride.stride

Long elegeant legs gracing the African grassland
My skin prickling with excitement, anxiety and fear
Daddy long legs stretching as fast as they can go
Faster.faster.faster.faster

I turn my head slightly and see her creeping into my shadow
Ready to pounce, ready to beat me at my game
I look at the ground and see our shadows dancing about like cat and mouse
My shadow finally breaks free from her embrace
Steady.steady.steady.steady

A sudden urge to lose my foe make it eat dust; teach her a lesson
But my foe still seems eager to beat me on my turf
My heart starts to beat faster as I pump my legs
Tadum.tadum.tadum
Faster.faster.faster.faster

My elegant legs itch to reach safer ground
I finally claim it and turn around to see her
Relieved that the cat chase race has finished
I have once again beaten huntress on my turf

I look around and see that my African grassland has gone
I am no longer a gazelle, the long legged graceful leaper.
Whirrs of blue and yellow teammates come to congratulate me
As I become human, I fade out, falling to the grass in blind oblivion.
