Top Spin Twist

Careening out of its orbit, its course unclear,
Little and insignificant, yet a powerful sphere.
He tries to imagine where the ball will land,
And executes movements he painstakingly planned.
Both knees quiver from muscular stress,
In this grueling, physical game of chess.

The ball hits the net, a temporary win.
The match suddenly stops, but again must begin.
"Match point!" he cries, ready to prevail.
He raises his racquet as his opponent turns pale.
Simply a vertical toss met with a flick of the wrist,
A powerful stroke mixed with his top spin twist.

The ball hovers in air, then quickly skips,
Unpredictably spinning, a blurred ellipse.
The opponent leaped to save the serve,
Just a split second to correct the path of the curve.
But his actions were pointless, he fell and missed,
Another victim of the top spin twist.
