For A Friend

I wish I could tell you how much you mean to me
Without bursting into tears

I wish I could explain how much I look up to you
And how my heart is already contracting in anticipation of the hole
You will leave in it

I wish that I could take a picture of your voice
A running commentary complete with all your cynical advice
I grimace at the thought of a day without one of your
Wicked insights on my otherwise most ordinary life

I wish that I could slow down time, add hours to the day
Enough to let us finish all our hastened conversations, our fleeting laughs
And enjoy the silence that so rarely graces us with its
Tremulous soothing touch

I wish that our lives could remain unchanged
I know that change is inevitable
I wish that we could stay friends forever

I know we will.
